| | | The database is clean. All illegal characters have been replaced/removed. As expected there were a few hundred word collisions that had to be screened and removed and a few words that didn't contain anything after the illegal characters were removed. The deletion button is no longer rusty.
From now on we only accept so called legal characters, in other words the letters a-z, the numbers 0-9 and the characters dot (regarded as a dot) and hyphen (regarded as a space).
The server guinea-pigs have all been trained to recognize the forbidden characters and redirect the page to a page without them, so you'd better behave.

| | | This is the end. No more illegal characters on istheshit.
At first we thought that they were fun and wanted to keep them, but they cause more problems than they are worth. As part of the preparations for istheshit version 2.0 (yes, it's comming) we'll be removing all illegal characters from our database. If possible we'll replace them with legal characters but some uploads will be lost.
The character _ (underscore) previously used as space will be replaced by - (hyphen). All links to istheshit using underscore will be redirected to the address using hyphen instead.

So why did it take so long? Because we had to manually go through all 25000 (!) istheshits that could not be automaticly sorted.

Update: We had an additional downtime for about an hour this evening to let our hosting do some magic to the electrical system/UPS. | |

| 2006-08-09 | | Aaaaaand.... we're back! (again) | |
| | | As you might have noticed we were down for a week. This was due to a broken down system disk which probably happend due to rough handling by the police (see newspost 2006-06-07).
The downtime was a little bit longer than we would have wanted, but shit happens when it's the middle of the summer and noone is around to replace the disk.

We still have 8830 old images to re-classify (see newspost 2006-05-24).

We will start the work on istheshit version 2.0 as soon as possible. It will be full of fantastic, exciting and shiny new features, have a new look and an even better server (think xeon, think scsi, think raid, think more ram than you'll ever see).
And of all this wonderful stuff we will tell you ...nothing. Why? Because we do this in our spare time, we have regular jobs, so we don't want to promise anything that we don't have the time to deliver.
We would however like for you to tell us what you would like to see on istheshit. We have big plans, but they can always be a little bigger. ;-)

| | | As you probably noticed the police took our server when they raided the hosting company PRQ to take down The Pirate Bay 2006-05-31. They also took the servers for 100+ innocent customers, including us. For more information follow this link.
We have now gotten our server back from the police and are running on our primary server again. The site might be slow for a while as our hosting tries to get the network working without much of the equipment the police took.
Some images uploaded to the temp server are missing, they will be added to this server within a day or so. | |

The site is now running on a 2.8 GHz Celeron with 1 GB ram and WD Raptor disk.

New classification.
We have implemented a non-english class to words, meaning that non-english words not will show up through random.istheshit.net. Because we want that all people to understand what they see. Old words may not show up though, we must first manually re-screen all the old posts.
Better handling of non-standardized characters.
We know that non-standardized characters really aren’t allowed in domain names and that they never worked for Linux users, and lately for the Windows Firefox 1.5 users neither. The non-standard plus-sign we used as space in links has been changed to underscore. This works in all browsers and operation systems. All words containing non-standard characters have also been flagged and will no more show up through random.istheshit.net. So now no one shall get a non working page when they use random.istheshit.net. We still allow non-standardized characters, so no old words has been removed, and you can still upload to any "word" you like.
Showme.istheshit.net.
Implemented a way for Linux / Firefox 1.5 and others that can't use domain names containing non-standard characters to see words that don’t work. Go to http://showme.istheshit.net and use the box there. Spread the word to you friends.
